Interactions With Your Home

During this time of sheltering in place, have you noticed any changes in your interactions with your home? The staff at Eco Three certainly has!  Noticing how you interact with your home can have a big impact on comfort and utility bills.

Me (Elizabeth) and My Spouse:

We recently up-sized by about 1000SF. We are making big efforts to keep our electricity bills from climbing (from our smaller condo bills) while working from home. With the current relatively mild weather, we are taking advantage by opening windows and letting some fresh air move through the house. We have even been using our whole house fan! I swore I would remove that thing as one of our first tasks in our new house. However, for now I will take it. We also use ceiling fans…a lot. And the debate continues between my spouse and me as to whether they should be left on when no one is in the room to “keep the air from getting stagnant.” We have extra blankets standing by when the evening dips into cooler weather. And until we seal our duct work, we will NOT be running the heat pumps – to cool or heat!

David and His Family:

David turns the thermostat up a little during the day so that he, his wife, and their new baby aren’t trying to cool the house as much during the day as they do at night for sleeping. His wife likes it cool, though, so it’s been a bit of a battle. They are also trying to balance keeping it cool enough for their comfort but warm enough for the baby. They use a little space heater by the crib, and it does not seem to impact the overall comfort of the home. David is also debating what to do about his leaky old windows.  This is a common issue in an older home like his.

Jonathan and His Family:

Jonathan has been using windows for fresh air and circulation; however, his family’s allergies have limited that. The extremely high pollen levels mandate that the AC is the main source of air movement for now.
